Kayaking the Ohoopee: What to Know Before You Paddle

There's no better way to see the Ohoopee River than from a kayak.

The water moves slow. The banks are quiet. And the only sounds out there are birds, the paddle dipping in and out and maybe your kids asking how much farther it is.

If you've never paddled a river before, don't worry. We'll walk you through it.

Here's what to know before you head out from Ohoopee River RV & Camp Resort.

Kayak Rentals: How They Work

Our kayak rentals are by appointment, and they depend on river levels. Some days the river is just right. Other days it's too low or too high to paddle safely.

That's why we ask you to call ahead. Give us a ring at 833-646-6733 and we'll tell you what the river is doing and get your time set up.

What It Costs

  • Adult kayak: $40 for 6 hours

  • Double or XL kayak: $60 for 6 hours

  • Canoe: $60 for 6 hours

Six hours is plenty of time to take it slow, stop on a sandbar and not feel rushed.

What a Paddle Day Looks Like

The Upstream Shuttle

Here's the part people love. With a rental, we'll shuttle you upstream, drop you in the river and let you paddle back to the campground. It's a paddle of 2.5 hours or more, all downstream.

The shuttle is free with your rental. It does take an appointment and a $100 minimum booking, so a group of friends or a family is a great fit.

Bringing Your Own Boat?

No problem. Our personal boat shuttle is $25 per boat. Just know that anyone parking for river drop-off or pickup, or launching a kayak from the campground, needs a day pass.

Stop at a Sandbar

The Ohoopee has sandbars, and they make the best rest stops. Pull the kayak up, stretch your legs, have a snack and soak up the sun. Some people spend half the day on one.

Pack light and plan to be on the water a while. There's no schedule to keep out there.

Play It Safe on the River

We love the river, and we want everyone to enjoy it safely.

  • Check the conditions. River levels change, so ask us before you go.

  • Read the river signs. They're posted for a reason, and we'd like you to read them before you get in.

  • Swimming is at your own risk. Keep a close eye on the kids.

  • Tell someone your plan. Let your group know where you're headed and when you plan to be back.

When to Go

Fall is a lovely time to paddle. The air is cooler, the scenery is pretty and the river is peaceful. But any time the river levels are good, it's a great day for it.

Not sure if conditions are right? Call us. We'd rather answer a question than have you drive out and miss your paddle.

Make a Weekend of It!

A paddle day is even better when you don't have to drive home afterward.

RV Sites: Pull in, hook up and walk to the river.

Tent Sites: Classic camping with the water close by.

Cabins: A few more comforts of home after a day on the water.

Glamping: A real bed and A/C waiting when you get back.
