Fishing the Ohoopee River: Bream, Bass and Catfish

"You can catch anything in our river that can be caught in Georgia."

That's how Mr. Billy puts it, and he's the man who built this campground.

Okay, there's one exception. No trout. But he means every other kind of fresh water fish Georgia has to offer.

So if you've been looking for a place to wet a line, the Ohoopee River at Ohoopee River RV & Camp Resort is a great spot to start.

What's Biting?

The three you'll hear about most are:

  • Redbreast bream: Locals call them "brim." They're a favorite for a reason, and they're a great catch for kids and beginners.

  • Bass: A good one will give you a fight and a story to tell around the fire.

  • Catfish: A classic Georgia river catch and a fine reason to plan a fish fry.

Those are the most common catches, but Mr. Billy would tell you to keep your line in and see what else shows up.

Fishing With the Whole Family

You don't have to be an expert. Some of the best fishing trips are the ones where the kids are just learning.

Find a spot along the river, bait a hook and settle in. Even if the fish aren't biting, you're sitting by a river on a nice day. That's not a bad deal.

Don't Forget the Basics

Before you head out, take a few minutes to read the river signs and check conditions. River levels change, and we want everyone to stay safe. Keep a close eye on the little ones near the water.

Planning to fish? Be sure you have what you need to fish legally in Georgia before you come. We can't give you the details on that, but the state wildlife agency can.

Fishing and Kayaking Go Together

Want to reach new water? Our kayak rentals are available by appointment and depend on river levels. They start at $40 per kayak, so give us a call to set one up.

A kayak and a rod make a pretty good morning.

Make It a Fishing Weekend

Here's how we'd plan it.

Friday: Settle In

Get set up, walk down to the river and scout your spot. Grab some ice at the camp store while you're at it.

Saturday: All Day on the Water

Early morning is a peaceful time on the Ohoopee. Fish for a while, take a break, then fish some more. Bring the kids, bring the dog (on a leash) and bring a lunch.

Saturday Night: Cook Your Catch

Every site has a fire pit, so you've got a place to cook. Add a bundle of firewood from the camp store ($6) and you're set. Tell the story about the big one that got away. Everyone has one.

Sunday: One Last Cast

Check-out is at 11 AM. That leaves time for a slow morning and one last cast before you pack up.

Where to Stay

RV Sites: Full hookup and pull-through.

Tent Sites: Starting at $25 a night, with water and electric.

Cabins: A comfortable place to dry off at the end of the day.

Glamping: Sleep outdoors with a real bed and A/C.

Come Fish the Ohoopee!

Pack your rod and your patience. The river will do the rest.
